TAMARIND - History of Name

Why we call tamarind as tamarind and not as guava or mango.
The story goes like this.
Mahmud Ghaznavi raided India several times about 17.
In one of his raids he took Tamarind with him because he and his soldiers liked the taste very much.
When he reached his own country the loot was appreciated and so was the taste of Tamarind.
When people asked Mahmud the name of the fruit he could not tell the same.
But being a king he could not show his ignorance.
So he Said that this is TAMARE HIND.
In Arabic tamare means fruit
And later it became TAMARIND.

Similarly Neem is botanically named as Azadirachta indica beacuse in India neem grows freely all over the country and this botanical name comes from AZAD -DARAKHT - E - HIND. The freely growing tree of India.
